Salarium is a zine of digital illustrations, A5 landscape, following salt through history — from the Roman salarium, the root of our word “salary”, through trade, ritual, feast and crown. Painted in chalky texture on dark grounds, in a palette of salt-white, brick red and gold.

A white-robed figure standing in a great stone bowl reaches towards a procession of hooded figures carrying bowls of salt
A pile of white salt examined under a brass magnifying glass, on a black ground
Salarium — a pile of salt beneath a brick-red archway, with a wooden scoop, a crown, a spiked helmet and a laurel sprig
A red and teal fish carrying a bowl of salt leaps over an old stone bridge beneath pink clouds and golden light
A crowned salt-cellar figure sinks into a dark sea beside salt mountains, with an aqueduct and a golden-domed palace beyond
A fisherman in a helmet stands in a river holding a bowl of salt, beside a net full of red fish, below a town of dark red towers
A snail with a spiral shell sits at a red dining table beside a fallen salt cellar, a fork and a glass of red wine
A white dove carries a bowl of salt in its beak past grey church spires, with small cross-shaped birds around it
A red-haired king in a golden crown gazes into a bowl of salt among salt-filled bowls and blue hills
A girl in white with antlers stands on a stone pedestal holding a bowl of salt, ringed by hooded standing stones
A vulture stands among heaps of salt and fallen feathers before a red castle at dawn
